Imaging Services at the Berkeley Outpatient Center

UCSF Health and John Muir Health have partnered to offer a full range of advanced medical imaging services in Berkeley. We provide 3D mammography, MRI, CT, PET-CT, X-ray, ultrasound and DEXA.

X-Ray

Our low dose digital X-ray provides quick, clear imagery for most bone and chest views. No appointment needed and walk-ins (with orders) are welcome.

Dexa (Dual X-ray Absorptiometry)

DEXA scans are bone density tests designed to measure the strength, density and size of your bones to determine any bone loss. Similar to X-rays, they are painless, noninvasive and do not use a tunnel, as with an MRI.

Bone density testing can help to:

  • Detect/confirm osteoporosis
  • Detect low bone density before any fracturing occurs
  • Determine and monitor your rate of bone loss with regular testing intervals

If you’re an existing UCSF patient, you can schedule your Dexa appointment online through MyChart. For new patients, please call to schedule.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound, also referred to as sonography, is an imaging method that uses sound waves to create and produce images of prescribed areas within the body. The images can provide valuable information for diagnosing and directing treatment for many diseases and conditions.

3D Mammography Screening

We offer both screening and diagnostic mammograms in one convenient location. Behind every screen is a team of technologists, radiologists, and cancer care specialists from UCSF who work as a team. All breast imaging studies are interpreted by a dedicated fellowship-trained UCSF breast radiologist.

A breakthrough technology for detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages, Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT), also known as “3D mammography,” is available to all patients and is especially helpful for patients with dense breast tissue. DBT takes multiple pictures of each breast from several angles, providing clearer images. This allows the radiologist to see through overlapping tissue to find hidden cancers.

MRI Services

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is an imaging test that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create pictures of the body. It does not use ionizing radiation (x-rays). Our industry-leading 3T MRI technology enables faster, more accurate scans with BioMatrix Technology that reduces the need for re-scans while enhancing results. Our wide-bore MRI also provides more comfort for larger patients or those who suffer from claustrophobia.

CT Services

A computed tomography (CT) or computed axial tomography (CAT) scan is an imaging method that uses x-rays to create pictures of cross-sections of the body. Our SOMATOM CT system delivers excellent imaging quality, quickly, with technology optimized for oncology and cardiology.

PET-CT Services

Positron emission tomography (PET) and computerized tomography (CT) are two imaging tools that allow doctors to pinpoint the location of cancer within the body. PET-CT combines the two techniques to more accurately diagnose and locate disease.

Our state-of-the-art PET-CT scanner, the Biograph Vision 450, can detect very small changes in the body. The outstanding image quality improves accuracy and allows us to provide more precise diagnoses and more personalized care. We can also collect images more quickly, which shortens the exam time and lowers the radiation dose.
